Rosacea

Rosacea is a chronic skin condition that affects the central face, most commonly in individuals aged 30 to 60. It is more prevalent in those with fair skin, blue eyes and Celtic origins. It can present in a transient, recurrent or persistent manner and is characterised by its redness.

What causes rosacea?

The exact cause of rosacea is not known, but there are several theories including genetic, environmental, vascular and inflammatory factors. Long-term exposure to ultraviolet radiation may also play a role. Additionally, research has shown that people with rosacea have higher concentrations of antimicrobial peptides such as cathelicidins in their skin, which is a part of the skin's normal defense against microbes.

An increased incidence of rosacea has also been reported in people who carry the stomach bacterium Helicobacter pylori, however, most dermatologists do not believe it to be the cause. Certain facial products, creams or oils, and especially topical steroids can aggravate rosacea.
